Mosaic, capital M, is the manufacturer we buy adhesives, polymer coatings, and tile installation systems from. Mosaic Brands is the name you see on the product family, the spec sheets, and the account login. Lowercase mosaic is the decorative tile style made of small pieces mounted on mesh backing—the same kind of tile we install on shower walls and feature floors.

The mix-up caused a real ordering mistake here. Our project coordinator meant to order Mosaic polymer-modified thin-set mortar, and the line item below it read "mosaic tile sheets." Same word on the same screen, two completely different vendors and delivery docks. The first question is not the brand of the applicator. It is the chemistry of the coating. A low-viscosity acrylic coating can go on with a roller or an HVLP sprayer and still lay down an acceptable film. A high-solids polyurethane is another story. High solids means high viscosity, and high viscosity needs pressure—typically an airless or air-assisted airless setup with a tip matched to the product's recommended orifice size. A cheap HVLP sprayer will just spatter it. Not because the sprayer is defective, but because it is the wrong tool for that polymer.

We bought the cheap sprayer because a forum post said it worked for everything. It did not. CMX ceramic spray coating is a representative of the silicon-dioxide ceramic spray category. These products spray on easily, dry to a slick finish, and do an impressive job of making a surface bead water. On a ceramic tile backsplash, a shower fixture, or a decorative tile feature wall that sees light use, that kind of protection may be completely sufficient.

It is not the same thing as a polymer coating, and I would not spec one in place of the other on a floor that has to survive carts, dropped tools, and cleaning chemicals. Polymer coatings—acrylic, polyurethane, epoxy—cure into a continuous film with measurable thickness. They bond to the substrate and take physical abuse. A ceramic spray coating forms a much thinner protective layer. It is a maintenance product and a hydrophobic treatment, not a structural film.

The risk calculation is straightforward. The upside of the cheaper spray coating is lower material cost and faster application. The risk is that we discover a year later that it did not protect the surface the way the project required. The question I keep asking in that situation is whether the savings are worth a redo that costs ten times the difference. On tile floors, the answer has been no every time.

Is DNA a monomer or polymer—and why is that question here?

If a biology search brought you here, here is the direct answer: DNA is a polymer. It is a natural polymer built from smaller units called nucleotides, and each nucleotide is a monomer. The DNA strand itself is the polymer.

I included the question because the same monomer-versus-polymer vocabulary shows up on coating spec sheets, and it confuses more buyers than it should. When a label says "acrylic polymer," it means the coating contains long chains that are already polymerized. When a hardener label warns about an isocyanate monomer, that small molecule has not joined the polymer chain yet—it will react during curing. Monomer content affects the coating's application properties, cure time, and emission profile. It is not marketing language. It is measurable chemistry.

Why should a purchasing person care? Because isocyanates are sensitizers. OSHA's guidance on isocyanates warns that overexposure can cause occupational asthma, and the risk is highest when coatings are sprayed. I still kick myself for the first two-part polyurethane order where I filed the SDS without flagging that section for the crew. The installer noticed throat irritation from overspray, reported it, and we stopped the job. We were lucky it was minor. Now the SDS gets attached to the job folder and the isocyanate warning goes on the whiteboard before spraying starts.

What paperwork should tag along with every coating order?

I have a short list, and I do not release a payment until every item is present.

The SDS, current and specific to the exact product. A certificate of analysis with a lot or batch number that we can trace back to the delivered containers. A technical data sheet that includes application conditions and recoat windows. And an invoice that matches the purchase order line by line—same product names, same quantities, same pricing.

That last one sounds too basic to mention until you get burned. One vendor could not produce a proper invoice; they sent a handwritten receipt and expected our accounting department to accept it. Finance rejected it, the expense came out of my department budget, and we ate $2,400 that we never recovered. I now verify invoicing capability before placing any order over a few hundred dollars.

How do I test a polymer coating before committing to a large order?

Run a mock-up. It is the only way I have found to avoid turning a new coating product into a very expensive learning experience.

Use the same substrate material the job will use, the same primer, and the same application method. Measure the wet film thickness while you apply it and the dry film thickness after it cures. Then wait for full cure, not just touch-dry. Touch-dry can happen overnight; full mechanical and chemical resistance can take several days depending on temperature and humidity. A coating that feels hard after eight hours may still be far from ready for foot traffic.

Once cured, compare the test panel against the client's color sample. This is where I get to sound technical: the color difference is measured as Delta E. Pantone's color-matching guidance holds Delta E under 2 as the tolerance for brand-critical colors, notes that differences between 2 and 4 are visible to trained observers, and points out that anything above 4 is visible to most people. If a vendor will not commit to a color tolerance number on a large light-colored floor, that is a red flag.

A mock-up day costs a few hundred dollars in material and labor. Removing a failed coating costs considerably more, and it happens in front of the client. I build mock-up time into every project that involves a coating we have not used before, and I would rather look overly cautious in the schedule than explain a delamination to a general contractor.
