What is a polymer material, exactly?

Yes, if they’re the right grade. Breast pump parts are commonly made of polypropylene, silicone rubber, and polyethersulfone. These polymers are chosen because they can handle hot milk, repeated steam sterilization, and contact with skin without breaking down or releasing endocrine-disrupting chemicals. But don’t buy from a photo; buy from a spec sheet.

Check whether the polymer is explicitly rated for food contact or medical device use. If it’s just “food-grade,” ask whether that rating covers repeated high-heat exposure, because a breast pump flange goes through a lot of autoclave cycles. One customer once paid $800 in rush shipping just to receive a general-purpose plastic part that wasn’t rated for steam sterilization. They had to overnight the correct silicone version and eat the cost. The lesson: ask for the material certificate before you authorize rush fees, not after.

Are steroids polymers?

No. Steroids are a family of lipids. Their structure is based on four fused carbon rings, and as molecules, they’re relatively small. A polymer, by definition, is a large molecule built from many repeating monomer units. A single steroid molecule has no repeating chain.

The confusion probably comes from biology textbooks, where proteins, DNA, and cellulose are polymers—so people expect anything biological to be one. But proteins are polymers of amino acids, and DNA is a polymer of nucleotides. Steroids are not. If someone asks, the one-sentence answer is: steroids are lipids, not polymers.

There is one edge case: drug delivery systems can encapsulate a steroid inside a polymer carrier. That makes the combined material a polymer composite with a steroid payload, but the steroid itself is still not a polymer.

Do polymer materials expire?

Yes, and the expiration date is often earlier than you’d think. Many polymer-based adhesives, coatings, and sealants have a shelf life of 12 to 24 months from manufacture, not from purchase. Heat, UV exposure, and freeze-thaw cycles can shorten that fast.

In 2023, I saw a warehouse manager find a pallet of premium epoxy coating on sale—it was just past the expiration date. He wanted to save $1,200. It didn’t cure in one section because the hardener had crystallized, and the crew left a patchy floor. The rework cost $4,000 and weeks of downtime. How should contractors choose polymer materials when the deadline is tight?

First, match the material to the conditions, not to the label. A moisture-tolerant fast-cure polyurethane will get you out of trouble on a damp slab. A standard rapid epoxy may not.

Check the data sheets, the batch numbers, the certifications, the cure time, and the substrate. If a supplier can’t answer those questions on the first call, find a different supply chain.
