Do we need a polymer additive for thinset on every tile job?
No. Anyone who says 'always' is probably trying to load your truck with extra inventory. The more useful answer is yes for a lot of modern tile jobs. Large-format porcelain, low-absorption tile, floors over radiant heat and exterior installations put stresses on cured mortar that plain thinset might not handle. In those cases, a polymer additive for thinset improves adhesion and flexibility. When the spec calls for it, use it.
The flip side is the assumption I see most often: if a little polymer is good, more must be better. It isn't. When a thinset is already polymer-modified, adding extra polymer changes open time, shrinkage and drying behavior. The goal is to follow the manufacturer's design ratio, not to create some 'extra strong' mix. And on total cost, the cheapest install is only cheap if it stays in place. A bucket of additive is a rounding error compared to grinding up a failed floor.
Why are plasticizers added to polymers, and should I be suspicious of the word?
Plasticizers are added to polymers to make them more flexible and easier to work with. On a molecular level, they get between polymer chains and increase movement. The practical result shows up in things like flexible membranes, sealants and certain hot melt products that need to bend, stretch or stay workable at low temperatures.
The word 'plasticizer' sounds like a way to cheapen a formula, but that's backward. A rigid product is often easier to formulate. Designing a flexible material that stays flexible without becoming weak or sticky takes more care. The danger isn't the presence of plasticizers—it's the wrong plasticizer for the application. If a plasticizer migrates out over time, a film can harden, shrink or discolor. That's why I look for a manufacturer who publishes performance data and can explain what their plasticizer package is designed to do, not just how much is in the mix.
When does bulk hot melt adhesive actually make sense?
Bulk hot melt adhesive looks smart because the per-pound or per-pail price drops as quantity goes up. Unit price is part of the decision, but it is not the whole cost. Before I sign for a large quantity, I check consumption rate, shelf life, storage space and how the product will be handled. A bulk price on paper becomes an expensive pallet in the warehouse if the crew doesn't use it before the product expires or picks up moisture.
Here's something vendors won't tell you: the biggest cost in a bad bulk buy is not the product. It's the changeover. When you switch to a cheaper bulk hot melt adhesive, your production or installation team has to adjust temperature, open time and cleanup habits. If the new material is not identical in behavior, you'll burn labor hours figuring it out. Oh, and freight is never free—I've seen a low quote turn into a high invoice after liftgate charges and minimum order fees. I calculate the total cost per usable unit, not the price per pound, before I commit to bulk.

An unsupported claim might not cost anything on the purchase order, but it can become an expensive problem during a project review. The vendor's marketing language is not the specification—the technical document is.
