Mosaic Quality Manager's 7-Point Checklist for Buying Adhesives & Polymer Products

Buying adhesives or polymer products based on price alone is risky. A MOSAIC quality manager explains how to check specs, test samples, verify plants, and compare total cost before you order.

Every quarter I reject about 6% of the incoming product lots that cross my desk. That isn’t because my suppliers are careless. It’s because the purchase order was vague: “adhesive” or “polymer” is a category, not a specification.

I’m a quality and brand compliance manager at MOSAIC, a specialty chemical company that produces polymer-based adhesives, coatings, and tile installation products. Over the past four years, I’ve reviewed roughly 400 product lots a year—checking certificates, running bond tests, and sending material back when the paperwork promised more than the product delivered.

If you buy construction chemicals for a B2B operation, work in procurement, or manage installers, this is the checklist I use before approving any polymer or adhesive product. It won’t turn you into a chemist, but it will keep you from buying the wrong thing.

1. Start with polymer basics before you compare prices

Every few weeks, somebody asks me, what is polymer plastic? It sounds like a beginner question, but it’s the right starting point. Plain-language answer: a polymer is a large molecule made of repeating smaller units, and plastic is a common type of polymer material. In construction chemicals, the polymer family decides how a product sticks, flexes, cures, and handles moisture.

When I read a quote that says “polymer adhesive,” I don’t accept it. Which polymer? Acrylic? Polyurethane? Epoxy? Styrene-acrylic? Each one behaves differently under heat, moisture, and movement. A vague product description usually means nobody has thought through the application yet.

I’m not a polymer chemist, so formulation details are outside my lane. What I can tell you from a quality perspective is simpler: if a supplier can’t tell you the polymer family and the test standard, you are not buying from a manufacturer yet. You’re buying from someone who also hasn’t read the spec.

2. Verify the product name before a single quote comes in

If your project involves fixing tiles to a wall or floor, you need tile adhesive. “Tissue adhesive” is medical-grade adhesive used to close wounds. The two terms are close on a keyboard and nowhere else.

I’ve seen this mix-up happen internally. At one point we had a purchasing request for “tissue adhesive” sitting next to a tile installation project, and the quote came back at roughly five times the expected budget. A typo was the trigger, but the real problem was that nobody had put the manufacturer’s exact product name on the request.

Use the supplier’s own product name and code on every document. If you are looking at MOSAIC products, match the product line and code exactly. People sometimes group multiple Mosaic brands together as if they were interchangeable. They aren’t. A logo is a brand; a formulation is a formulation.

3. Get the TDS and SDS—then demand a batch certificate

Three documents matter before you pay:

  • TDS (technical data sheet): what the material is supposed to do—open time, pot life, application temperature range, coverage, curing schedule, and test method.
  • SDS (safety data sheet): how to handle the product safely, including exposure limits and first-aid measures.
  • COA (certificate of analysis): proof that the specific batch being shipped actually meets those numbers.

One TDS downloaded from a website is not proof that a particular bag or drum was made to that spec. The COA is the link between the paperwork and the physical lot. If a supplier says they don’t provide COAs for a product line, that tells you what you need to know: they aren’t testing each lot, and you would be carrying that risk.

4. Test samples under job-site conditions, not lab conditions

The most common mistake I see is comparing samples in a warm, dry meeting room and choosing the strongest one after one day. That is selecting a product for the wrong environment.

In Q1 2024, I tested four polymer-modified mortars from four suppliers for a renovation project. Two passed under realistic conditions. One passed at 21°C and failed at 12°C with a damp substrate. One supplier never sent a sample after three reminders. That last data point tells you something too.

When you test, do it the way the site will actually treat it:

  • Test on the real substrate. Plywood is not concrete.
  • Test at the lowest temperature the project will see, if possible.
  • Let the material cure for the full time in the TDS before pulling bond tests.
  • Keep a sealed sample from the same batch for later comparison.

The counterintuitive part: high early strength is overrated. A product that is moderately strong but consistent between batches will serve you better than one that looks great in one test and fails the next. I learned that lesson the hard way when a visually identical “equivalent” failed three weeks after installation and cost us a full redo.

5. Compare installed cost per square meter, not price per bag

Sticker price is the smallest number on the invoice. Total installed cost is the one that matters.

Installed cost per m² = material price per m² + labour + primers or accessories + risk of failure + cost of rework.

Here’s an illustrative example, not a live quote. Product A costs $13 per 25 kg bag and is applied at about 6 kg per m², plus a separate primer. Product B costs $18 per bag and is applied at about 4 kg per m², with no primer. At bag level, A looks 28% cheaper. At the wall, A is roughly $3.10 per m² just for material, while B is about $2.90 per m². Don’t hold me to those coverage figures—coverage depends on substrate flatness and trowel notch size—but the calculation is the point.

Now add labour: the higher-coverage product means fewer bags moved, less mixing time, and fewer trips across the site. And once you add failure risk, the cheapest bag can become the most expensive adhesive you ever bought. I’ve seen a debonded tile installation cost a contractor about $22,000 in tear-out and replacement. The product that failed was chosen mainly because it was cheap per bag.

6. Know which plant actually made the product

Place of manufacture is not trivia. Two plants can run the same formula with different raw materials, water chemistry, process controls, and QC culture. The results can be subtly different—and in adhesives, subtle differences show up as bond failures.

When I was assessing Summit Polymers Plant 1 in early 2024, the thing that impressed me most was batch traceability. Every pallet had a batch number. Every batch had a retained sample. Every retained sample had a location and a destruction date. That is what quality looks like on the plant floor.

Not every buyer needs to visit a facility. But you can ask three questions by email: Where is this made? Which plant? Can you provide the plant name on the COA? If the answer is vague, treat that as a risk flag. Distributors are fine to buy from; just make sure there is a named manufacturer behind the label.

7. Put acceptance criteria into the purchase order

If it isn’t in the PO, it doesn’t exist. After a problem, “we didn’t know that was a requirement” is not an excuse—it’s a negotiating position. Make the PO say:

  • Exact product trade name and product code.
  • Polymer family or applicable standard, for example EN 12004 C2TE for a cementitious tile adhesive.
  • Certificate of analysis due before shipment, not after.
  • Manufacturing plant name and lot number on each container.
  • Minimum remaining shelf life at delivery.
  • Agreed remedy if the batch fails: return, credit, or replacement labour.

At the research stage, searching “mosaic brands” or “what is polymer plastic” is fine. Those phrases help you discover product families. But a purchase order is where discovery ends. The PO should carry the exact trade name, the code, and the evidence you will accept.

Common mistakes that show up after the order

If you skip part of the checklist, here is what usually happens:

  • Comparing quote prices before the specification is fixed. This produces fake price differences and bad decisions.
  • Testing at 21°C in a dry office and expecting the same result on a cold, damp slab in November.
  • Using an old TDS. Suppliers change formulas, and sometimes the published data sheet lags behind. Check the revision date.
  • Not keeping a retained sample. A sealed sample with the batch number can settle a warranty dispute in ten minutes. Without one, you are arguing memories.
  • Accepting a verbal “it’s the same thing” from a distributor. If it is the same, the documents will say so.

Quality work is not glamorous. It is mostly paperwork, retained samples, and asking the same question twice. But the cost of skipping that paperwork is far higher than the cost of doing it.

Document-aware reading

When a Mosaic article discusses performance, readers should check whether the value is tied to a named test method and whether the statement applies to a resin grade, an application, or a finished article. Safety references should be checked against SDS Section 2. Sustainability references should identify the boundary, reporting period, and verification status before being reused in customer documents.
