Most mosaic tile failures I've seen weren't caused by weak adhesive. They were caused by the wrong adhesive for the substrate. In eight years of specifying adhesives for wall and floor tile jobs, I've documented 14 material spec mistakes that cost roughly $18,600 in wasted budget. One of the most expensive lessons was about adhesive tensile strength.
If you're choosing an adhesive for a mosaic project, start with compatibility, not strength. Check the tile backing, the substrate, and the moisture conditions. Then compare the numbers.
The mistake that changed my checklist
In my first year (2017), I made the classic beginner mistake: I chose an adhesive because it had the highest tensile strength number on the distributor's chart. That product was designed for metal-to-metal bonding. It was not designed for thin vinyl mosaic tiles on a moisture-prone wall. The edges started curling within a few weeks. The supplier accepted a return, but only after an awkward phone call.

What the test doesn't show
Real walls aren't controlled. You have moisture, temperature swings, dust, uneven surfaces, and tile backings that flex differently than a standard test panel. Tensile strength tells you how strong the bond is on a clean, flat, prepared surface. It doesn't tell you whether the bond will survive the tile moving, the wall expanding, or the substrate being damp.
Vinyl-backed mosaics are a common culprit. The vinyl can contain plasticizers that keep it flexible. Some adhesives break down when they contact those plasticizers. The bond might start fine and then degrade over months. That failure mode won't appear in a tensile test.
If you're comparing adhesive tensile strength values, also check the test method. A tensile number and a shear number are not the same measurement, even when both come from reputable standards.
Why 'polymer' on a label isn't enough
The word polymer appears on a lot of construction product labels. It also appears in sports equipment—the polymer in some ping pong paddles is part of the sponge and bounce layer, not a construction adhesive. That's an extreme example, but it makes the point: polymer is a huge category.
Acrylic, polyurethane, SBR, epoxy—they're all polymers, and they behave differently. A polymer-modified thin-set isn't the same as a polymer-based pressure-sensitive adhesive. If a data sheet just says polymer-modified, ask which polymer. If the manufacturer won't tell you, treat that as a warning.

I have mixed feelings about tensile strength marketing. On one hand, strength matters; nobody wants a tile that falls off the wall. On the other hand, a number can become a distraction. The fundamentals haven't changed. Surface prep still matters. Curing time still matters. Compatibility still matters. What has changed is the range of adhesive chemistries available—if you read the specifications.
According to the Tile Council of North America's Handbook for Ceramic, Glass, and Stone Tile Installation (tileusa.com), the setting material has to match the tile type, substrate, and service conditions. That guidance is easy to skip in a marketing comparison. It's never safe to skip in a real installation.

I don't want to make this sound easy. After we switched to an acrylic-based adhesive for that vinyl-backed project, I checked the walls every week. What if the primer wasn't dry? What if the humidity was too high? I didn't relax until the first inspection passed.

My experience is based on roughly 200 specification reviews, mostly interior residential and light commercial projects. If you're working on a pool, facade, or industrial flooring, your requirements are different, and I can't speak from direct experience.
