When a project hits a deadline crunch, the instinct is to focus on shipping speed. But after coordinating hundreds of rush orders for Mosaic over the past six years, I can tell you that speed wasn’t the bottleneck in most of them. The bottleneck was the name.

In the last 200+ rush orders I’ve handled, around 70% of the delays came from a mismatched or unclear product description — not from freight, capacity, or price. The classic examples? Someone asks for a “protein polymer name” for a bonding job, or they want to know what stores sell nitric acid to clean tile. Both requests are understandable. Both are also wrong in most contexts—and knowing the difference saves days.

The “protein polymer name” mix-up

Sometimes a customer says, “Is that a protein polymer?” or “Our old file says protein polymer for the emulsion.” There’s no standard industrial adhesive called a “protein polymer” in our catalog, and that’s because proteins are only one type of polymer. In construction adhesives, you’re usually dealing with synthetic polymers—and the one people are usually reaching for in this scenario is VAE, or vinyl acetate-ethylene.

To be fair, there are protein-based adhesives out there (casein and soy-based glues, for example). They show up in wood adhesives and some label pastes (not usually in tile work, though). But if you’re working with tile adhesive, exterior coatings, or flexible cementitious products, you’re probably in VAE territory. VAE emulsions are valued for their flexibility, adhesion, and low odor.

Why does the market matter? Because VAE is a commodity-grade raw material with a price that moves. According to a 2024 industry summary from the Adhesive and Sealant Council, the vinyl acetate-ethylene emulsions market is being pulled by construction activity and pressed by raw material costs (verify current data). That means if you’ve been buying a certain adhesive for years, the formulation might shift slightly—and the name on the datasheet matters more than the generic label.

What stores sell nitric acid? (And why you probably don’t need it)

The second emergency question I get: “What stores sell nitric acid?” Nine times out of ten, it’s from someone trying to remove cement residue from a tile surface. They heard that nitric acid is strong enough to dissolve mortar, so it should work. Here’s the sharp version: normal hardware and big-box stores don’t stock nitric acid, and for good reason. It’s a concentrated mineral acid that can burn skin, create toxic fumes, and damage the very tile you’re trying to save.

In most cases, you don’t need nitric acid for grout haze or cement film. You need a cleaner specifically designed for masonry—often phosphoric acid or sulfamic acid based—applied according to the manufacturer’s instructions. They’re effective, safer, and available from janitorial or tile supply houses.

The legitimate exception: industrial surface preparation. In certain coating processes, nitric acid is used for passivation or pH adjustment, and occasionally for cleaning stainless steel. That’s a different environment, with proper PPE, ventilation, and containment. If you truly need nitric acid for an industrial application, you’ll buy it from a chemical distributor—not a retail store. And if you’re doing that, you’re probably not asking “what stores sell nitric acid”; you’re working from an MSDS and a PO.

Speed is good, certainty is better

What I tell every customer in a rush is simple: the value of guaranteed turnaround isn’t speed—it’s certainty. That’s especially true for chemistry. A cheaper quote with “estimated delivery” means nothing if the product doesn’t match the substrate, doesn’t meet the spec, or shows up in the wrong form.

When I look at total cost on an emergency order, I don’t just look at the unit price. I factor in the base product cost, setup or minimum order charges, freight, any rush fees, and the risk of reordering a second time because the first batch was wrong. The cheapest quote on paper is often the most expensive one in reality.

That’s why we encourage clients to send the product family name, not just a brand memory. Where this advice breaks down

Of course, there are boundaries. This guidance is for common construction and maintenance scenarios—tile, concrete, coatings, and general bonding. If you’re a specialty formulator working on a novel release coating or a chemical processing line, VAE and acid-cleaning rules change. In those cases, use your technical team’s judgment and a qualified supplier.

Also, I’m not a safety officer. The nitrile gloves or respirator questions? Those belong to the SDS and your employer’s safety program. I can tell you which chemistry family a product falls into, but a generic blog post isn’t a substitute for hazard communication.

And if you are looking for nitric acid for a legitimate industrial need, please dispose of it properly, store it in compatible containers, and keep it away from incompatible materials. Just don’t use it on someone’s floor tile.

In the end, an informed customer is the customer I trust. You don’t have to be a polymer chemist to buy the right adhesive—you just have to ask the right questions. That’s why we share this stuff. Education beats emergency every time.
