I'm a procurement manager at an 80-person tile and construction supply company. 4. What are condensation reaction polymers?
Condensation reaction polymers are formed when monomers join through a condensation reaction, meaning each bond-formation step releases a small molecule such as water, methanol, or hydrogen chloride. Classic examples include polyesters, nylons, and phenolic resins.
Why does a procurement person need to know this? Because not all polymers form the same way. In contrast, addition polymers such as polyethylene form by adding monomers without releasing a byproduct. That distinction matters when you read technical data sheets: it gives you a clue about moisture sensitivity, cure chemistry, and shrinkage behavior.
I'm not a chemist, but I am a buyer, and I learned the hard way that the word 'polymer' is not a spec. When a vendor says 'our adhesive uses a special polymer system,' ask which polymer chemistry, what the cure byproduct is, and what that means for the substrate. 5. What is fiber reinforced polymer concrete?
Fiber reinforced polymer concrete is a composite material that uses a polymer resin, often epoxy, vinyl ester, or polyester, as the binder instead of Portland cement. Short fibers are added to improve tensile behavior and control micro-cracking. It is not simply concrete with polymer fibers; the binder itself is the polymer.
The American Concrete Institute's 548 series of guides covers polymer concrete as a distinct family. If you are writing a spec for FRPC, reference the relevant ACI guide, because 'polymer concrete' alone can mean different things.
In terms of cost, FRPC usually prices higher per cubic foot than cement-based concrete. I don't fight that. I look at total cost: fast cure, thin overlays, chemical resistance, and bond strength can reduce downtime and rework. Over the last six years, I have used FRPC for repairs where a seven-day concrete cure would have shut down a loading area. The premium was small compared to the cost of a week of downtime.
6. How do I compare quotes for adhesives and polymer concrete without missing hidden costs?
My first question is not 'What's the price?' It's 'What's not included?'
Put every quote in the same format: material, delivery, surface prep, primers, application temperature requirements, disposal, cleanup, and warranty. A cheap bag of adhesive can become an expensive line item once freight and disposal appear on the invoice.
In 2023, a coating supplier offered us 'free setup.' The setup was free. We still paid $450 for calibration and test panels. I should have read the quote line by line. What I mean is, I now read every line before I issue a purchase order.
The vendor who lists all fees upfront, even if the total looks higher, usually costs less in the end. At least, that's been my experience with both coating systems and polymer concrete repair kits.
